America is a very bad boyfriend but why do I still love him? If we are potentially witnessing the death of the USA as we know it, New York cabaret superstar Lady Rizo delivers a deeply personal musical eulogy, unpacking the feelings for the country she was born in, cut with her trademark humor, wit and soaring voice. Backed by a choice trio of musicians, Rizo leads us to our own utopian island nation…with no walls, only velvet curtains. Experience the trademark titillating humor and soulful voice that has created a cult fan base around the world when Lady Rizo performs exclusively at NORPA at Lismore City Hall on Saturday 3 March. If you missed her at Sydney Festival, this is your only chance to catch her in the show everyone has been raving about. ‘Cabaret Superstar’ (New York Magazine), comedienne, and chanteuse, Lady Rizo, won her first Grammy in 2010 on a duet with acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and also sings and records with multi-platinum recording artist Moby. “An anarchist streak still runs through me,” says Lady Rizo, the singer-sophisticate who was once a teenage punk rocker. “I love the idea of claiming something that’s uncool and making it authentic.” To that end, the NYC-based artist has earned a name for herself by transforming nightclub-pop into experiences that are more soulful, more theatrical. A provocateur with an electric wit, Lady Rizo is a vessel for the spirits of Edith Piaf and Freddie Mercury. The New York Times once referred to Lady Rizo (né Amelia Zirin-Brown) as “a formidable belter who can sustain phrases and notes even when sprawled on her back on a piano and scissoring her legs.” They’re not alone in that enthusiasm. Lady Rizo has collaborated with Moby, Reggie Watts, and Yo-Yo Ma, the latter on his Songs of Joy & Peace album, which won a Grammy Award. She’s received a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship, a Time Out London theater award, and a 2013 London Cabaret Award. She also co-composed music for Adam Rapp’s Los Angeles, as well as theme songs for the Fuse network and E! Entertainment. All of which is to say: Our Lady of Perpetual Creativity is, by design, many things to many people. “I love taking these beautiful, luxurious images or sounds and pressing them up to the very raw pain of existence. Making people feel alive—grand and giant one moment, yet intimate and vulnerable the next,” says Rizo. “That’s why I introduce myself as chanteuse, which Piaf described as someone who takes one song and makes a whole opera out of it. Many of my songs carry a kernel of mystery, and I hope my music makes listeners vibrate with that excitement.” In person, Lady Rizo is a force of nature. Literally. Once, a tornado alarm even went off in the middle of a very dramatic rendering of “Over the Rainbow.” (This was, curiously, in New York City.) “I feed off the hit of the audience, the experience of live performance,” she says. “It is the most present I feel. And anything I do is to feel more present.” LADY RIZO RED, WHITE AND INDIGO Saturday 3 March, 7:30pm

at Lismore City Hall Tickets $25-$54 Bookings: norpa.org.au or call 1300 066 772 Patron advice: Recommended for ages 16+

Byron Spirit Festival ‘We Are The Mandala’

Staying true to this year’s theme of ‘We Are The Mandala’, Byron Spirit Festival expands its weekend-long programming to include even more teachers and nurturers to assist in your journey of self-discovery and development. Fabulous!!" Brett Whiteley travelled extensively throughout his life, setting down his experiences in charcoal, photographs and paint - a visual diary of Paris, New York, Tokyo and his many other destinations. Brett Whiteley: other places (somewhere else) showcases these paintings, drawings, photographs and sketchbooks, revealing the artist's intense desire to document his unique vision and experiences. The exhibition includes his early works of Paris, which have never been displayed before, and his last experiences of the city. One of Australia's most celebrated artists, Whiteley immersed himself in these cities, recording his impressions of the urban landscapes and the people within them, with great energy, humour and sensitivity. He responded to New York's dynamic environment and the broader social, artistic and political issues facing America at the time. In Japan, he saw first-hand how traditional methods of Japanese painting and drawing can beautifully and succinctly capture a subject. Whiteley produced beautiful works throughout his travels, capturing well known and loved destinations across the world in a fresh, yet recognisable way. Brett Whiteley: other places (somewhere else) closes on Sunday 3 December 2017. Brett Whiteley: other places (somewhere else) is an Art Gallery of New South Wales and Brett Whiteley Studio touring exhibition developed in partnership with Cairns Regional Gallery.

Woodford Folk Festival is coming!

Here in the Northern Rivers we are incredibly lucky to have a number of massive festivals right here in our backyard, we are somewhat spoilt for choice... but regardless many of us still make the annual pilgrimage up to the Sunshine Coast each Christmas for our absolute favourite festival, Woodford.Australia's largest gathering of performers, the Woodford Folk Festival is held every year between 27 December and 1 January at a dedicated 500-acre site known as Woodfordia, one hour's drive north of

Here in the Northern Rivers we are incredibly lucky to have a number of massive festivals right here in our backyard, we are somewhat spoilt for choice... but regardless many of us still make the annual pilgrimage up to the Sunshine Coast each Christmas for our absolute favourite festival, Woodford.

Australia's largest gathering of performers, the Woodford Folk Festival is held every year between 27 December and 1 January at a dedicated 500-acre site known as Woodfordia, one hour's drive north of Brisbane. A collection of hundreds of Matchbox and other miniature diecast vehicles, on loan from father and son Scott and Magnus Green for the next Collectors Cabinet, is sure to delight young and old this summer, according to Museum Director Judy Kean. "The Collectors Cabinet program at the Museum is unearthing some amazing private collections. I have had a number of conversations over the past year that start with 'Oh, I don't really collect anything …' but it's soon revealed there are many closet collectors out there," Ms Kean said. "We're delighted to be able to bring some of these to light for our visitors to enjoy." Scott Green's collection began virtually the same time he did. From birth, family members bought him Matchbox trucks, tractors, cars and emergency vehicles and each birthday added more to the collection. Matchbox toys have been popular world wide since their creation by Lesley Products in 1953. Named after the boxes they were once sold in, similar in style and size to the packaging for matches, they have been an enduring toy for millions of children around the world - often forming lifelong collections. Scott's early childhood memories include studying the annual Matchbox catalogues and ticking the models he planned to buy each year, as the number of vehicles in his collection grew into the hundreds. The collection of well used toys from the early 1970s were joined by even older diecast vehicles, including several of the original Lesley models that really did fit in matchboxes. The collection and the Museum's Matchbox Madness display includes many of the classic cars of the road and track during the 1970s and 1980s. It sat in storage for nearly three decades, occasionally bolstered by a particularly eye-catching model, but was recently unearthed as Scott sows the seeds of a collection for his own children. "I hope it brings them as much joy as it did when I was growing up," he said. Matchbox Madness is on display from 27 November until May 2018.

Many friends help those without - NUDGE turns 2

Celebrating it’s terrific Two with You and many friends, the Cunning Stunts Sold Out 2nd Birthday holiday season celebration and first ever themed dress-up, Nudge Nudge Wink Wink is on December 3rd. Fragile and meticulously put together they reach up, reach the ceiling or stay grounded where married with concrete.

The site’s light and shadow inspiration is reflected all through the show. Graphic photographs map angles and shades, diffusing the border between solid and ephemeral. Yet it is the portals at the entrance where I happily get lost in a land of light and shadow. They are a beautiful restrained exploration of the negative space, the in between, the nothing that becomes something by creating a border. Lit dramatically the shadows are a component of the work.

The strength of the works, encapsulating big and small surprises, is that they allow the visitor to let their imagination roam. I thought he’d wasted most of his life recording rules about everything from shaving to shellfish in some bogus, self-righteous attempt to bring order and godliness to the world.

Wow, was I wrong! Seems Leviticus wasn’t even a person but rather some Old Testament Bible musings about what you have to do for God to like you so your neighbours don’t stone you to death. Translated, ‘Leviticus’ means something like ‘Book of the Levites’. Who knew and who the hell are the Levites?

Anyway, scholars think these rules were developed over the 7th to 5th century BC. Yes, ‘Leviticus’ was a work in progress for a few hundred years meaning either God couldn’t stop giving updates or there have been a lot of fingers in this part of the proverbial Bible pie!

Given the time period, it’s hardly surprising Leviticus’ rules are sensationally harsh, considering things have changed a bit in the last few thousand years. It’s also pretty obvious that the banks haven’t heard of Leviticus or they’d surely know that charging interest on loans is strictly forbidden!

Still, even with the obvious lack of practical application regarding Leviticus’ rules in a modern world, there are some conservative Christians who think Leviticus’ moral code is just fine and dandy. Seriously, I think this is because they’re not as conversant with the Bible as they’d like to think or they’re just cherry picking the bits they like.

The Old Testament is a bit like that. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good read but it’s a bit fire and brimstone, eye for an eye and incredibly violent and judgmental due to the cultural and historical context in which it was written. That’s why most of us have heard more about Jesus in the New Testament with those lovely parables about love, compassion and forgiveness stuff. It doesn’t scare the children so much!

Things got a bit off track with the Old Testament according to modern Christianity. Apparently, that’s why Jesus turned up, to remind us of our basic humanity and forgive any previous transgressions. This was totally necessary back then to stop a lot of people hating and murdering each other!

Leviticus, however, was pretty comfortable hating and murdering people who didn’t follow his rules. Even more strangely, Leviticus’ moral code is still used today as a justification to demonise and eradicate those who are different. That’s the thing with the Bible, it contains so many conflicting views on things that you can justify just about anything if you pick the right verse!

So if you’ve ever heard someone say homosexuality is an abomination, chances are that Leviticus had something to do with it. The thing is, Leviticus wanted to stone a lot of people, not just homosexuals, so take care because, according to Leviticus, you’re toast if you do any of these things:

eat pork or shellfish, plant more than one crop in a field, wear wool and linen in one cloth, commit adultery, wait too long before consuming sacrifices, beat your slave with a rod so they die (but you have to wait a couple of days to see if they get up).

It’s not just Leviticus, the Old Testament Book of Deuteronomy says you can’t wear fabric with more than one type of cloth and something about making tassels to wear on the four corners of your garment. Seriously, who has the time!

Leviticus also thought it was ok to sell your daughter into slavery, as long as it was to a neighbouring country! That’s probably why the Bible’s New Testament states in Hebrews 18:13 that the old law is obsolete and aging, while Romans 10:4 says Jesus is the end of the law. Lucky for us because otherwise we would have run out of stones by now!

So, if you identify with Christian values, great, because the Bible has some nice ones. Problem with using Leviticus’ Old Testament rulebook though is that it makes for a dull and violent life with all those stoning responsibilities. There is however, one Leviticus commandment that makes so much sense that it’s found throughout the Bible … ‘love thy neighbour as thyself’.

Yes, even Leviticus put down those stones and came through in the end! So save yourself the worry about what consenting adults do in their own time and focus on something you can change, like starving children in war-torn South Sudan! As the Christians say, ‘May peace be with you’.

Check out the famous ‘Dear Dr Laura’ letter on our website that started it all. It’s hilarious!

Tasting our way through the Tweed......

What better way to sample a region than through the palette. Located in the green caldera, built amongst an ancient shield volcano that is rich in red fertile soil there is an abundance of subject matter to write about.

Driving from the ocean, the best path into the farms is literally through the coastal plains, into the valleys- all the while following the landmark beacon which is Mt Warning Wollumbin, clearly visible from most vantage points.

Heading up Cudgen Road you get the sense that the farming starts here and continues winding its way through to the Murwillumbah markets, a weekly event with a strong focus on sustainable local produce- I'm heading in that direction to meet with the farmers.

The road is adorned with pop up fruit and vegetable stalls, sunflower fields and large farming sheds that house many a crop. A sharp right turn up the top of Cudgen Road and you arrive at the iconic 'Tropical Fruit World' formerly known as Avocado land, it’s a mecca for tourists both nationally and internationally. Perhaps the importance being placed on natural, exotic and sustainable produce is due to the tropical farming practices adopted by the team.

A classic example of this is local chef and identity Steve Snow owner of the famed Fins restaurant in Salt Village, Kingscliff. Steve utilises what's in season and likes to create dishes from the weird and wonderful produce available from Tropical Fruit World-like black sapote fruit and the tangy finger limes, indigenous to the area.

Heading towards Murwillumbah township, I pass through aptly named towns like Condong and Tumbulgum, the area pays homage to the indigenous forebearers and the long time commodity of the region's sugar cane industry. Insert a Paul Kelly song here: cane fields, lost love-the lyrics flow as I admire the view of the large industrial mill, 80's motel signs, lush green open spaces and that natural wonder that is 'Mt Warning Wollumbin'

I arrive at the destination after a quick cruise through Murwillumbah, the town is a unique fusion of old meets new, it has its own groove, its own style, from the flannelette shirts to the floral dresses.

Murwillumbah is artistic to say the least and it is said that the town and surrounding regions host more artists per capita than anywhere else in Australia. Speaking of art, you can't go past the Tweed Regional Gallery just a few kilometers out of town- think Margaret Olley, Ben Quilty, David Hockney and Brett Whitley, but hey, that's a whole other story- next time.

I arrive at the farmers market greeted by the delightful market manager Sue, who salutes every punter with a smile as they pass on through. This sets the tone as we meet the likes of Farmer Pete (natural meat co) to Carlu (Nimbin Valley Dairy) to Barry the beekeeper. There are markets aplenty dotted around this great southern land, but for me, the Murwillumbah Farmers Market captures that true Aussie spirit: local, fresh, friendly business done well, foraged and farmed, paddock to plate and all those buzzwords in between.

It's as authentic as the drive out from the palatial beach homes along the Tweed coast, through the rich red fields to the quaint regional towns. Then out to the iconic Murwillumbah showgrounds that house the most rustic of buildings, all the while perched underneath the watchful eye of Wollumbin.

This is now my weekly ritual- my boots firmly placed in the farming grounds that make up the Tweed region and beyond.....al naturale'

A Royally Good Time

A Royally Good Time is coming to you with a killer lineup including UK dance lords Prok & Fitch, sultry indie rockers Seaside, garage gang The Cinema Wristys, brother sister syth pop duo Niterunner and the all conquering girl band Galaxy Girls. On top off that, Byron’s finest selectors Webber, Dad Bod, Kurt King, 404 and Safari DJs will be treating us with tunes all night long. From frantic banjo and guitar riffs and snapping drums, to the sultry string lines and passionate vocal harmonies, it’s impossible not to be caught up in their infectious blend of funky bluegrass and roots music when they play like they own the place.

I had a chat with the lead singer, Chris Eaton. Yes, he’s a bloke, they all are…. not a girl in sight, but there is a lot of long flowing hair.

“The Scissor Sisters are not girls, The Beautiful Girls are not girls.” Chris tell me with a laugh. it’s not surprising that many have been confused after seeing the the bands earlier posters in which a large breasted, Amazonian woman was waving a banjo above her head.

“One time we had 20 blokes turn up to a gig when we were setting up and they were looking at us going ‘where’s the girls’ we said ‘this is it mate, this is as good as it gets!’. They all left before we had even played.” He laughs

It’s been nearly a decade since the The Round Mountain Girls got together for the sake of pure musical gratification and four years since their last recording session, and a lot has changed for Rabbit Robinson (violin), Chris Brooker (mandolin), Chris Eaton (banjo), Francois de Klerk (drums) and Chris Willoughby (bass).

The groups recent 10-date East Coast tour was highlighted by their Bluesfest experience, where they opened the stage for superstars like Santana and Jethro Tull.

“It was quite humbling because there weren’t many Aussie bands at all. There was only ourselves and the Wilson Pickers. It was the biggest crowd we have ever played to, around seven thousand, and the response was fantastic”

“It gave us a taste for what it could be like. Bluesfest is a huge production and seeing the people who wander around backstage and the quality of what goes on. I was thinking to myself, jeez how did this all happen for us?”

“It was also great seeing so much talent from the Northern Rivers on the Bluesfest Busking Atage. Every time we walked past, we had to stop, so that was a nice local thing to have. There is loads of talent in the Northern Rivers. We have some great venues which are very supportive of the original music scene.” Chris says.

After touring with well known English group The Levellers in Australia, RMG are finally heading off to tour internationally, playing three festivals and a stack of sideshows and then off to the South Pacific on board Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas with Lee Kernigan and John Williamson for Australia's biggest rock 'n' roll festival at sea.

“We keep knocking on doors and they keep opening and we keep walking through and finding what’s on the other side.”

If you’ve seen the band live you’ll appreciate the energy and commitment to each and every song they perform. Their real challenge has been to get that drive onto a studio album.

The studio process has enabled the band to demonstrate a new level of maturity and empathy in their song writing. They noticed their writing styles were telling the tales of those they had met over the years giving birth to their progressive new album Meet You At The End.

“We have got a bit more serious and artistic” Chris says of their new album

Released in 2017 and recorded over 5 sessions at Rocking Horse Studios, Corrabell, NSW and Pete Murray’s Studio in Byron Bay. Meet You At The End is a Story Album, which tells the tale of a man who has had everything, lost everything and is clawing his way back.

Easily the band’s strongest release to date and also available on vinyl. Engineered and co-produced by Paul Pilsneniks, Mastering by Paul Blakey of 12th and Vine Post and Artwork by Kasha DeKlerk.

"It wasn’t planned as a concept album, but we found that songs went into certain order and told a story. The album is about a man looking back on his life, but with wisdom and hindsight.” Eaton said.

“The reason we did vinyl, was to encourage the listener to sit down and hear it as a whole piece of work. We noticed that when we put in a certain order, it has a story to it.”

“The catalyst was a song called Young and Able. It’s about a mate of Brookers who got into Ice. A smart guy, uni, lovely wife and he blew it all. His family disowned him, his daughter didn’t speak to him for 19 years.”

“Chris and I write the songs, but we don’t write together. He comes up with core progressions and words and I add the banjo riff and rabbit often comes up with lyrical lines and we throw it all in together.”

“I wrote a song on this album with my son. Well, no, he wrote it and I nicked it. It’s a song called ‘Nothing At All’, about how he followed this girl around the world like a puppy dog.

“The new album was so much fun. It has our first song where a dog got a music credit when he barked in time with the music.”

Find out where the girls are playing next and check out their new www.roundmountaingirls.com

You won't be dissapointed!

Images by Duke Albada

Calm Down with Jason Delphin

Amy Young had the pleasure of interviewing her ole rock buddy Jason Delphin whom is currently making waves in the touring music scene. Just days ago, releasing his brand new self-titled album, that’s simply got to be heard

So Jason, you're a Tassie boy originally, but call the Far North Coast home these days, when did you move here and what brought you to our sunny shores?

I moved to Queensland when I was 22 years old. I was unearthed by TRIPLE J at the time and the move had to be made. I have always been an avid surfer so the waves and weather brought me to the Gold Coast.

It's been said that your unique sound could transpose to many genres from Cowpunk to Blues, Stomp, Soul & Folk; but throughout all your albums, it is very relevant that your Smokey Rock vocals always share a great story. With tracks on this next self titled album like ‘

’ and ‘Hang my head in Shame’ exposing relateable lyrics. I’ve spent a few days listening to these new tracks, it feels like you may have started scrawling lyrics on the back of wild turkey coasters in a honky tonk, does inspiration happen like that for you? Or is there a method to your musical madness?

There has never been a method. My music comes from a very lonely place, being on the road, performing solo 300 gigs a year can seriously take its toll mentally and psychically. ‘Calm Down’ is essentially about resolving my never-ending battle of anxiety with the ocean, whereas ‘Hang my head in Shame’ is quite a dark song about being a human being, destroying the environment and well, just being very materialistic about everything, like the tall poppy syndrome I guess, these days we all must have this and must have that. The common theme was inspired from the movie ‘The Cove’ about the Japanese fisherman slaughtering dolphins. Being a surfer of 25 years, I felt seeing that film made me feel nothing but pure shame to be a human being.

I get it, some gruesome images there, somethings got to change, it’s great that you have found a way to empower the animals and give them a voice through your music, you do touch on some pretty dark stuff mate. So, tell me, when and why did you start playing? Who were your greatest influences then, and whom muses you now?

Well I started in a punk rock band called ‘Counterweight.’ We were quite successful and I got to tour with some amazing bands, I was only 17 at the time. After that band split, I moved into the band ‘The Charlie Parkers’ and was then unearthed by Triple J. I went on to study my honours degree in jazz-composing/arranging. I guess my influences were NOFX, Frenzal Rhomb, Johnny Cash, Django Reinhardt, Joe pass and Charlie Parker. Today Seasick Steve and Jack White are my main influences. Hence my preferences of using cigar box guitars and all sorts of weird guitar pedals.

It seems you always have a different and unusual instrument in your hand, so which instruments do you play exactly and did you play these on this current album?

My main setup for the album were custom Cigar boxes made By Bruce Trappes from devil cigar boxes in Tasmania. I also use custom fender thin line telecasters and some old Gibson hollow bodies. It all depended on the songs colour and vibe I wanted to create, for most of the album the album, rhythm guitar wise you’ll hear mostly a 3-string cigar box.

Neat, listening to the new album, I can't help but picture myself dancing with thousands of others in the mud on a sunny festival day after a night of rain, these tunes organically make us want to stomp and dance - even seeming to trigger some Neanderthal ritual moves out of me that I did not even know I had! So, I can imagine you have played to some killer crowds... What has been your greatest gig to date?

Supporting the Violent femmes was my biggest highlight at the Albert Hall in Tassie. Solid 3000 people! Also, The Forth Valley Blues fest on the Friday night was damn special. Blues on Broadbeach last year was also a major highlight for me, pleased to announce I am back this year as well, so I’m super stoked.

Ripping festival for the Gold Coast. What are your fondest musical memories in the North Coast and where was your favourite place to gig in Tassie?

Ahh beautiful question. It all started at the Alex Hotel in Devonport Tasmania. Surfing with a solid crew of mates, battling the brutal cold water, and the West Coast (Marrawah) was always my main resource for massive barrels. That’s why Casuarina is these days beloved home town, still chasing those waves I guess.

I understand you do all of your own production here in your Far North Coast home and have a studio set up in Casuarina. What are the advantages and disadvantages of never being able to escape from your Imaginarium and working/creating from home? How do you balance your music with other obligations?

There has never been balance. I have always been a workaholic. I have a rather large studio and space which I recorded/tracked/engineered and played every instrument on. I almost gave up on this record, with moving house and gigging so much it was a massive effort. I lost some inspiration, had a serious case of writer’s block for a while, but when I moved to Casuarina, the rest of the album just flowed. It was the hardest thing I have done to date. I’m so stoked its finally out and available.

I know it’s hard to choose one as they are all your precious new releases, but it seems some tracks have had quite a lot of love on the production workbench. 'Midnight Woman' is a stand out for me, I just can't stop playing her. From an artist’s perspective, can you have a favourite? Or does it get to the stage you spend too much time with any given track and need a break from it?

Yeah Midnight Woman was the biggest production on the record, 120 tracks all up and months of mixing. But it is my favourite song on the record. I am very proud of that song. Fine Line is also a favourite as I tracked it very minimalist and live.

I knew I could pick a winner! Finally, what are you most proud of in releasing this new album? Performing it live? Keeping your sanity during this process?

Ha I have always been insane. Its trying to keep focused on the whole project as I’m in control of everything. Joel Graham was also a co writer and vocalist on a few tracks, so when I get stuck he was only a phone call away.

www.facebook.com/jasondelphinmusic

Artist Annie Long's MAT this weekend is not something to wipe your feet on!

This is a story about a MAT, but it is nothing to wipe your feet on! Rather MAT stands for Murwillumbah Art Trail. Our creative producer Duke Albada journeyed to Murwillumbah to chat with instigator and organizer Annie Long.

Annie, you are an artist yourself, how do you describe your work and what inspires you.

I work predominantly in multimedia sculptures and installations while also painting in oils. A love of travel and work in international language education has informed my work with recurrent themes of the journey (both inner and outer), the nomad and the migrant. Since moving to Murwillumbah 5 years ago I’ve been more inspired by the incredible natural environment and local history which both resonate with broader themes.

What in the hell possessed you to start an arts trail, was 2015 a particularly boring one for you?

Ha, ha. I can’t remember the last time I had time to be bored! I decided to do the Murwillumbah Art Trail as an Honours project in Visual Arts at Southern Cross University. I wanted to work on a larger scale and I visualised it as a large scale installation without really understanding the amount of work involved. Once I started, MAT really has taken on a life of its own so I’ve hung on for the ride! The visitor’s numbers to the Tweed Regional Gallery have all other Northern Rivers townships already green with envy so why add another art happening here instead of say Tweed Heads?

Yes, the TRG attracts fantastic numbers of visitors but that doesn’t provide more opportunities for local artists to exhibit. After living in urban areas for 7 years before moving here, it was very noticeable the lack of exhibition spaces in Murwillumbah. At the same time, the town was discussing the increasing number of empty shops. I decided to start in my own backyard and put together the existing galleries, amazing public art and the empty shops for artist run exhibitions. The art deco Regent Theatre is a great venue for the Murwillumbah Experimental Film Shorts. Is there a side effect of curating that has seen you mend your ways as an artist?

Yes, I’m way more organised when presenting my own work and I read the details!

We all have our favourites and pet hates. What do you look forward to the most and what do you dread.

I look forward to getting into the studio, getting in the zone and playing around the multitude of ideas that I have. I dread art critics who don’t get my work.Visitors often want to know ‘what it is about’, yet the artists don’t seem to have the answers. What are your thoughts about interpreting art.

I sometimes don’t understand individual art works and I take that as a challenge to delve a little deeper and look for the clues the artist has left. At the same time, artists are often working on an intuitive level so what is communicated may not be calculated. I prefer work that is multifaceted and hence can be interpreted on many levels. I hope viewers are brave enough to enjoy their own interpretations rather than waiting to be told by the artist.

If you like to see what your locally based (yet national and international acclaimed) artists are up to check out Murwillumbah Art Trail 2017: Past, Present, Future. Being a mobile gallery, this will be something that we get to start in Byron and take to the rest of the country, even the world.

“It’s exciting to launch at an event like Popped, to introduce the Byron Bay community to a new thing founded here in Byron”, Nitsua enthuses.

Audiences at Popped can make enquiries about booking the Fresh Air Galley for upcoming events and functions – both public and private, which is a fantastic point of difference for a gallery. It can take art and artists’ work almost anywhere.

This is a gallery that can be hired by the audience rather the artist having to pay for it.

Follow each Individual show and the live auctions supporting the cause through an instagram feed at @thefreshairgallery

Popped launches Friday 19 May at 5pm in Surf Alley, Byron Bay CBD. Tickets are $10 each, per person per session, and can be purchased via www.poppedcreative.com or at the door.

Debbie Does the Stars May/June

ARIESSometimes being bored is just the way it is for awhile. It’s not pleasant but it’s also not as bad as jumping out of an aeroplane and having your parachute fail. So thank your lucky stars and stop yawning and rolling your eyes when people are talking because they’re going to get sick of it pretty quickly this month. Also, just to be safe, better to not accept any offers to go sky-diving next month.

TAURUS

Desperate times mean desperate measures, but if you could stop being such a drama queen, you’d realise things aren’t as desperate as you imagine. Ok, the leader of the free world is a dumb ass and World War III could start at any time, but no need to build that bunker in the back yard just yet. You have other more important things to attend to such as learning how to close your bedroom blinds at night and getting that rash seen to.

GEMINI

It’ll be a bloody battle between the hare and the tortoise this month. Such is life for the Twins. Remember all those times when you were a kid and were never sure whether to cry or punch someone? Well same thing except you won’t be able to decide whether to run for your life or keep rambling along and letting the stupid people finish you off once and for all. Might be time to join the circus.

CANCER

Ok, so you spent more than you intended on Easter eggs this year, mainly because you ate half of them before the big day. No point beating yourself up again, it happens every year, so move on and start looking at gym equipment on those late night tv shopping shows. It’s not so much about buying anything but more about realising how ludicrous you’d look in gym gear anyway.

LEO

Porridge will be high on the agenda this month. Not because it reminds you of your childhood, but more because you’re feeling needy and want to load up the carbs in the hope of feeling a bit more loved like Goldilocks. Not judging you but seriously, see a shrink, switch to raisin toast and next month you won’t be found wandering the forest in search of three bears.

VIRGO

The moon is calling you this month but if you’re smart, you won’t answer. Seems there’s emotional stuff to deal with and we all know how that goes for you when all those bothersome feelings start acting up. So keep yourself busy and do anything to distract yourself. The moon will give up soon enough and you’ll look less like a forlorn hippy in front of all those people you are trying to impress next month.

LIBRA

Reminiscing will be a problem this month, because if you keep thinking about all the things you regret, you’ll just end up crying for 30 days or looking up some old flame on social media and embarrassing yourself. Better to take up a new hobby that won’t be ruined by sobbing, so anything too athletic won’t work. Maybe settle for some sort of craftwork that doesn’t require paper products because they get soggy too easily.

SCORPIO

You’ll feel like a huge weight has been lifted off your shoulders this month. You’ll be so happy that you’ll smile like a Cheshire cat and spontaneously wink at everyone, whether you know them or not. Please don’t though because you’ll look seriously creepy and scare people, particularly young adults who’ll think you’re a serial killer.

SAGITTARIUS

As tantalising as it may seem this month, under no circumstances are you to go into politics to save Australia from right wing lunatics. I know they’re getting quite shrill, but you have to let nature take its course and understand that the crowds flocking to the shallow end of the gene pool will trample each other soon enough. Stay calm and next month will be more enjoyable as you sit on the sidelines and take bets on who’s going to drown first.

CAPRICORN

Past improprieties are catching up with you and as much as you will want to blame someone else, it’s all on you this month. Yes, it might feel a bit like crawling over broken glass but if you pause and reflect, there is great opportunity for healing. Just honestly acknowledge that the broken glass is probably the guilty remains of all the alcohol you drank last month and move on. Next month will be chip packets!

AQUARIUS

Stay calm and go with the flow this month. You’re not developing multiple personality disorder but rather, there are a few pesky past lives howling for attention. Seems you left some things undone in a few of them so, if you feel the urge to cover yourself in turmeric or sit in the dirt and hum, no biggy, just have a shower afterwards and keep it to yourself because no-one wants to know.

PISCES

Easter was pretty intense this year and you’re still feeling a bit under the weather from the energetic shift. We all know you’re a sensitive little thing but can you please stop telling everyone this month. The energy will shift soon enough but at this rate, you’ll be standing in the bright, sparkly energy of a new life and wondering where all the people went. Not much point really!

Byron Writers Festival presents two events in one evening - Susan Faludi followed by Ivan Coyote

Byron Writers Festival presents two events on Wednesday 31 May 2017 at Byron Theatre: Pulitzer Prize winning SUSAN FALUDI in conversation with Zacharey Jane about her prize-winning memoir, In the Darkroom; Followed by IVAN COYOTE acclaimed storyteller and award winning author of Tomboy Survival Guide. In what promises to be an unforgettable evening of conversation, insight and emotion, Byron Writers Festival is presenting a double-bill on 31 May; two events in one evening with bestselling author Susan Faludi followed by acclaimed author and storyteller Ivan Coyote. The first event at 6pm is with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Susan Faludi whose astonishing memoir In The Darkroom was named 2016 New York Times Book of The Year. It also won the prestigious Kirkus Prize for memoir in late 2016. Starting as an investigation into the life of her estranged father, ‘the grievance of a daughter whose parent had absconded from her life’, the feminist writer discovered that her 76-year-old father had undergone sex reassignment surgery. Faludi's struggle to come to grips with her father's metamorphosis takes her across borders – historical, political, religious, sexual – to bring her face to face with the question of the age: Is identity something you choose, or is it the very thing you can't escape? 'More than memoir, or biography, it’s a detective story with two unforgettable characters at its center: an authoritarian Hungarian refugee who escapes the Holocaust; and Faludi herself, a feminist icon grappling with an unexpected family revelation. In the Darkroom is a landmark achievement in which Faludi uses her well-honed journalistic talents to tell the most intimate story she could possibly tell, her father’s journey into womanhood.' Kirkus Prize Judges’ statement. Ivan Coyote will take to the stage at 7.45pm. Ivan is the award-winning author of eleven books, the creator of four short films, and has released three albums that combine storytelling with music. A natural born storyteller, 'Coyote is to Canadian literature what kd lang is to country music: a beautifully odd fixture' (Ottawa Express) and often grapples with the complex and intensely personal issues of gender identity as well as family, class and queer liberation. “To have either of these extraordinary writers come to our region is a wonderful privilege, said Byron Writers Festival Director Edwina Johnson. “To be able to meet them both on the same night in an intimate setting is surely something not to be missed.” Session one: 6pm-7.15pm Pulitzer Prize winning SUSAN FALUDI in conversation with Zacharey Jane about her prize-winning memoir, In the Darkroom; Session two: 7.45pm-9pm IVAN COYOTE acclaimed storyteller and award winning author of Tomboy Survival Guide Presented by Byron Writers Festival, Wednesday 31 May, Byron Theatre, 69 Jonson St Byron Bay Tickets: Members: $30 single session / $40 both sessions Non-members: $35 single session / $45 both sessions Bookings: byronwritersfestival.com or (02) 6685 5115 Food will be available for purchase on site between sessions. MORE ABOUT THE AUTHORSSUSAN FALUDI Susan Faludi is a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and the author of the bestselling Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction; Stiffed: The Betrayal of the American Man, and The Terror Dream: Myth and Misogyny in an Insecure America. Her most recent book, In the Darkroom, a memoir on her transgender father and a meditation on identity in its many forms, won the Kirkus Prize for nonfiction and was named 2016 New York Times Book of The Year. Faludi's work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and The Nation. In The Darkroom – a memoir by Susan Faludi One of the best memoirs of 2016, In the Darkroom is an astonishing confrontation with the enigma of Faludi’s father and the larger riddle of identity. "In the summer of 2004 I set out to investigate someone I scarcely knew, my father. The project began with a grievance, the grievance of a daughter whose parent had absconded from her life. I was in pursuit of a scofflaw, an artful dodger who had skipped out on so many things – obligation, affection, culpability, contrition. I was preparing an indictment, amassing discovery for a trial. But somewhere along the line, the prosecutor became a witness." So begins Susan Faludi's extraordinary inquiry into the meaning of identity in the modern world and in her own haunted family saga. When the feminist writer learned that her 76-year-old father – long estranged and living in Hungary – had undergone sex reassignment surgery, that investigation would turn personal and urgent. How was this new parent who identified as "a complete woman " connected to the silent, explosive, and ultimately violent father she had known, the photographer who'd built his career on the alteration of images? Faludi chases that mystery into the recesses of her suburban childhood and her father's many previous incarnations: American dad, Alpine mountaineer, swashbuckling adventurer in the Amazon outback, Jewish fugitive in Holocaust Budapest. When the author travels to Hungary to reunite with her father, she drops into a labyrinth of dark histories and dangerous politics in a country hell-bent on repressing its past and constructing a fanciful – and virulent – nationhood. The search for identity that has transfixed our century was proving as treacherous for nations as for individuals. Faludi's struggle to come to grips with her father's metamorphosis takes her across borders – historical, political, religious, sexual – to bring her face to face with the question of the age: Is identity something you "choose", or is it the very thing you can't escape?IVAN COYOTE Ivan Coyote is the award-winning author of eleven books, the creator of four short films, and has released three albums that combine storytelling with music. Ivan is a seasoned stage performer and long-time road dog, and over the last two decades has become an audience favourite at storytelling, writer's, film, poetry, and folk music festivals from Anchorage to Amsterdam to Australia. The Globe and Mail called Coyote 'a natural-born storyteller' and The Ottawa Xpress once said that 'Coyote is to Canadian literature what kd lang is to country music: a beautifully odd fixture.' Vancouver Sun said 'Coyote is by turn eloquent, provocative and persuasive.' Ivan often grapples with the complex and intensely personal issues of gender identity, as well as topics such as family, class, social justice and queer liberation, but always with a generous heart, a quick wit, and the nuanced and finely honed timing of a gifted raconteur. Ivan's stories remind us of our own fallible and imperfect humanity while at the same time inspiring us to change the world. Tomboy Survival Guide - a memoir by Ivan Coyote Stonewall Book Award Honor Book winner; Longlisted for the BC National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction Tomboy Survival Guide is a funny and moving memoir told in stories, about how they learned to embrace their tomboy past while carving out a space for those of us who don't fit neatly into boxes or identities or labels. Ivan writes about their years as a young butch, dealing with new infatuations and old baggage, and life as a gender-box-defying adult, in which they offer advice to young people while seeking guidance from others. (And for tomboys in training, there are even directions on building your very own unicorn trap.) Tomboy Survival Guide warmly recounts Ivan's past as a diffident yet free-spirited tomboy, and maps their journey through treacherous gender landscapes and a maze of labels that don't quite stick, to a place of self-acceptance and an authentic and personal strength.

Jumpin’ jazz and sultry tunes from international cabaret royalty Ali Mcgregor

Saturdays are officially for dancing when Ali McGregor’s all ages show JAZZAMATAZZ! hits the Brunswick Picture House on Saturday, 13 May at 11am. Model Citizens seamlessly blends the risk and beauty of breathtaking physical improbability with theatricality, choreography and Circus Oz’s distinct brand of Australian humour. Stunningly lit and driven by a sensational live music soundtrack, Model Citizens unfolds within a cleverly designed model-kit world that challenges perspective, scale and concepts of normality. In Model Citizens over-sized, everyday objects are used as unexpected circus equipment that create an intriguing new playground for the all-human ensemble. Acrobats will back-flip off a giant vertical clothes peg, become tangled in an oversized cotton reel, roll bowling balls haphazardly, unzip giant zippers, balance on a house of oversized collapsing cards and fly high in an enormous pair of aerial undies! Exposing circus skills in unconventional ways, Model Citizens will present stunning group acrobatics with a twist: a ten-pin roué cyr act, quirky ball juggling, diving through giant scissors, hard-core hula-hoops and pyjama escapism. Model Citizens is a visually and emotionally charged journey by the multi-talented Circus Oz ensemble, which audaciously unpacks the myths of modern Australia and exploring what it really means to be a model citizen in the ‘lucky’ country today.Workshops In the lead up to the three performances of Model Citizens at NORPA on May 12 &13, Circus Oz will also be conducting a series of workshops for schools and the public at Lismore City Hall from Thursday 27 April to Saturday 29 April. Around 90 artists will exhibit in the permanent galleries, artist studios and public art which provide the foundation for eight pop exhibitions, chalk art, an architectural projection and a showing of experimental film shorts. This year’s theme of Past, Present, Future has resulted in thoughtful and beautiful responses inspired by local history, environmental issues and landscape. “

The most well-known site on the Murwillumbah Art Trail is the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre which will have seven different exhibitions including an exhibition of portraits of Olley by her artist friends, and self-portraits. The Yellow Brick Studio, a permanent Murwillumbah studio gallery that shows local contemporary painters and sculptors, will be one of the permanent sites on the trail. Organisers are also hoping the Caldera Art Gallery will also be back on its feet in time for MAT after being flooded in the recent deluge.

Other permanent sites on the Art trail are the long-standing David Benson’s Studio 88 in Main St and an exciting new development that is taking place at the old Sunrise Ford/ AWOL building: M-Arts. M-Arts is a new art precinct being born with artist studios and exhibition space.

The pop up exhibitions in the empty shops in Murwillumbah will showcase the many talented artists of the area working across the mediums of painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, mosaic, photography and video. The shows’ titles reflect the rich tapestry of art that will exhibited: Nature’s Riches, Ouroboros, Multiverse, Transcapes, Windows, Raw, Material Aesthetics and Our Glass Artists Collective.

On the streets, talented chalk artists will work their 3D magic on the pavements over the weekend of MAT and two of the digital artists will be projecting their works onto the Southern Cross Credit Union building on Saturday evening as part of the opening nights of all the exhibitions. The Murwillumbah Experimental Film Shorts in its second year, will screen at the Regent Theatre along with a Q&A.

It will be an exciting time in Murwillumbah. There are only 50 of these Flood Relief Gold Passes available and they are not transferable. It’s a one time offer and only accessible via splendourinthegrass.com. Do not purchase tickets or passes from any other auction site. Splendour tickets include the name and date of birth of the purchaser. This is checked against your ID at the festival gates. BYRON SHIRE – MULLUMBIMBY & DISTRICT NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE INC. “Times of crisis make us connect even more to our community. Businesses, council, organisations and the community become one in our actions and responses to our great challenges. I'm stoked to learn of our home grown festival and its staff adding to this response - especially for those in Byron's north who have been hit hard and largely forgotten so far by the Federal government. Good on ya Splendour!” Byron Shire Mayor – Simon Richardson LISMORE CITY COUNCIL FLOOD APPEAL “We are thrilled that Splendour in the Grass has come on board to help our flood appeal and our community,” Lismore Mayor Isaac Smith said. “The level of devastation left by this flood was unprecedented and it will take weeks and months for our city and our community to recover. The Lismore Flood Appeal funds will help those worst-affected by the natural disaster to get back on their feet and rebuild their lives.” TWEED MAYOR APPEAL FUND “100% of funds raised by the Mayor Appeal Fund will be distributed to local residents and businesses affected by the floods – there are no administration fees” said Mayor of Tweed Katie Milne. “We will be appointing an independent Committee, who will join me and Council’s Internal Auditor, to review applications for assistance. The priority focus will be on those people and businesses who have limited access or options to insurance claims, funding or grants and due to this are more likely to slip through the gaps.” If you already have tickets for Splendour in the Grass 2017 but would like to make a donation you can find the information for that at splendourinthegrass.com

The 28th Bluesfest - In Photographs

The 28th Annual Bluesfest Byron Bay held over the Easter long weekend has been a huge success, with just over 105,000 attendees enjoying the incredible music on offer, the beautiful weather and happy vibes around the festival. Being here at the festival it’s easy to think everything is fine. The truth is, it isn’t. There has been perhaps one billion dollars in damages to homes and property with many people unable to pay expensive insurance premiums. Saddest of all is that people have lost their lives. It’s not hard to give a little, it will mean a lot.

Patti Smith has graciously donated $10,000 to Rise Above The Flood. Her performances at Bluesfest are among the greatest ever and we can now see what a wonderful human being she is as well. People including our staff have lost their possession, property and friends so we find her generosity extremely touching.

You can find Rise Above The Flood here on facebook: Rise Above The Flood

The artists who put the Blues In Bluesfest!

Once again Byron Bay Bluesfest is bringing some of the world’s best Blues and Blues related artists to play at their festival over Easter. The iconic blues guitarist and singer, who is now 80 years old has been a pivotal force in music history. Buddy Guy has influenced titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan, is a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to that city’s halcyon days of electric blues.

The inimitable Bonnie Raitt, another incredibly gifted artist joins Buddy on the line up. She is more than a best-selling artist, respected guitarist, expressive singer and accomplished songwriter….Bonnie Raitt has become an institution in American Music.

Mavis Staples, one of the greatest gospel, soul and blues singers of all time, is returning in 2017 for four exclusive Bluesfest performances. Mavis Staples has managed to remain a leading voice in a career that has spanned over 60 years, she recently toured with Bob Dylan on his U.S. Summer tour and released her latest album Livin' on a High Note in 2016

After St. Paul & The Broken Bones tore the house down at their phenomenal Bluesfest debut in 2016, a campaign followed to bring them back in 2017. It is with great pleasure that Bluesfest announces the return of the recently expanded Alabama soul eight-piece led by the charismatic Paul Janeway, whose vocals have been compared to the likes of Otis Redding. Since they made their roof-raising debut at Bluesfest this year, St. Paul & The Broken Bones have been selling out theatres across the globe, performed on one of the main stages at Glastonbury Festival and will be releasing their sophomore album Sea of Noise this September. Sea of Noise is a successor to their 2013 debut album Half the City.

Vintage Trouble blew away Australian audiences with their blistering shows at the festival in 2016, leaving new fans in their wake, eager to see them again; so it’s with great pleasure Bluesfest can announce they will be back to rock the festival in 2017. Their brand new single ‘Knock Me Out’ was released in February; it’s anthemic, funky and will be electrifying live.

Vocal powerhouse Beth Hart gained a reputation as one of the ‘buzz artists’ at Bluesfest in 2014 and 2015, and will be returning in 2017 for Bluesfest exclusive performances. Beth Hart is on fire. Right now, the Grammy nominated singer-songwriter is riding a creative tidal wave, firing out acclaimed albums, hooking up with the biggest names in music and rocking the house each night with that celebrated burnt‐honey voice.

She wowed festival goers with her emotional range and dazzling vocal prowess in 2016, so Bluesfest is thrilled to have Rhiannon Giddens back in 2017. The Grammy Award winning lead singer of African-American folk interpreters Carolina Chocolate Drops, has stepped out on her own, winning over audiences around the world with, “the fervor of a spiritual, the yips of a folk holler, and the sultry insinuation of the blues” according to the New York Times.

It can be argued that it was Booker T. Jones who set the cast for modern soul and R&B music and is largely responsible for its rise and enduring popularity. On classic Stax hits like ‘Green Onions’, ‘Hang ‘Em High’, ‘Time Is Tight’ and ‘Melting Pot’ the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Musicians Hall of Fame inductee, GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and winner of four GRAMMY Awards pushed the music’s boundaries, refined it to its essence and then injected it into the nation’s bloodstream.

Bluesfest audiences in 2017 are in for a thrill when Experience Jimi Hendrix takes the stage. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix's unparalleled creative and musical influence Experience Jimi Hendrix is a concert that brings together an all-star line-up of some of Australia's guitar greats each performing their two favourite Jimi Hendrix songs and a couple of surprise duets.

Eric Gales stands head and shoulders among other guitarists in his genre and is out to blow your mind and expand your musical horizons, in fact Joe Bonamassa calls him “One of the best if not the best guitarist in the world today”. He is known for mesmerising fans around the world with his uncanny connection to his guitar.

In 1954 Mud Morganfield, the eldest son of Blues great Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield) was born. Possessing a baritone voice very much like his father’s, and blessed with similar vocal phrasing and a sense of how to command a stage, Morganfield cut his teeth on the southside of Chicago. He soon became a popular draw on the Blues club and festival circuit; mixing both original songs and Muddy Waters classics into his live sets. Regarding his performances of Muddy Waters songs in addition to his own material, Morganfield says, “I started to sing to show the world that dad left me here. I love and am proud to sing his songs just like I love and will always be proud of him. I’m not Muddy Waters and I’m certainly not trying to be Muddy Waters. I’m Mud Morganfield but when I’m up on stage I always feel pops is there with me and it means so much that I can get on stage and keep his music alive around the world.” Mud is a dynamic performer and entertainer that can command the stage, engage the crowd, and wow them with some of the best true Chicago Blues they have ever seen

The blond hair is the same, the body posture is also the same, and there are touches in the voice that have a similar genetic connection, but Devon Allman has toiled long and hard to establish his own musical identity, separate from his legendary dad, Gregg Allman. In 2017 Devon Allman returns to Bluesfest on the back of his critically acclaimed new album Ride or Die. He will once again bring his bring his first rate guitar skills and powerful vocals to the stage at the festival.

Through the ages, there have been a number of famous blind African American male entertainers in Gospel, Blues, Soul and Pop but few as unilaterally gifted as Ellis Hall. What other man can claim to have written 3,800 songs, sung at the funeral of Helen Keller at St.Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and before Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, been a member of Oakland Soul band Tower of Power and a lead voice for the animated California Raisins, been nominated for an Ovation Theatre Award for his first stage role in “The Gospel At Colonus” (in which he sang, acted, and walked the stage and stair props mostly unattended), and penned the official song of the city where he grew up: Claxton, Georgia? Welcome to the unprecedented greatness of Ellis Hall.

World renowned guitarist, and vocalist, Mississippi living blues legend, Cultural ambassador, 2012 Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame inductee, and 2015 Albert King Lifetime Guitar Award recipient - Vasti Jackson is a powerful force in the world of music. As an artist, Vasti is known for sweat-drenched, soul-ripping live performances marked by some of the most stunning, and innovative guitar playing today. Vasti's stellar vocals, fiery guitar, and stage presence captures the audience, and leaves a lasting impression that celebrates the triumph of the blues, and the joy of rhythm that is soul satisfying to all that are lucky enough to experience his music.

Founded in Los Angeles in 2011 The Record Company immediately took their hometown by storm, hailed by LA Weekly for “making bluesy music that would sound more at home in a sweaty, backwoods Mississippi juke joint.” They are a band who prides themselves on writing and playing raw, sincere Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Tony Joe White known to fans as The Swamp Fox is one musician who can certainly call Bluesfest his 2nd home, after multiple performances over many years. The American singer-songwriter and guitarist never ceases to please the Bluesfest audience with his swamp rock melodies, combining New Orleans-style rhythm and blues, country and western, and traditional French Louisiana musical influences.

“If Tina Turner and Little Richard had a daughter and raised her with the help of uncles James Brown and Chuck Berry, she’d be like Nikki Hill.”— Minneapolis Star Tribune. Just a couple years ago, Nikki Hill was a bartender with an affinity for punk and a deep love for classic R&B. At her husband (and now guitar-player) Matt Hill’s behest, she stepped out from behind the bar and onto the stage. The response has been ecstatic, and now the band tours the globe relentlessly, stunning audiences with their muscular sound, Matt’s volcanic leads, and, of course, Nikki’s inimitable charisma.

He won the hearts of many Bluesfest goers in 2016, so it’s with great pleasure they welcome Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton back in 2017. This young musician sings and plays banjo, guitar, piano, fiddle, harmonica, Cajun accordion, and the bones (percussion). He has an eerie ability to transform traditional jazz, blues, folk, and country into the here and now, and make it real. He is also renowned for mesmerising audiences with his humour and storytelling. He's a world class talent and a uniquely colorful character. Mastering many styles including country and delta swap blues, Paxton is the real deal and someone Bluesfest is proud to bring to Australia so that audiences here can discover this wonderful artist for themselves.

Bluesfest is proud to welcome Australian-based musician Jeff Lang to the festival in 2017. He has earned worldwide acclaim as a virtuosic guitarist, a dynamic songwriter and a startlingly unique live performer. With a back catalogue of 16 studio albums, Jeff has been featured at major festivals, pubs, clubs, arts centres and venues internationally for the past decade. Blending rock, roots, folk, blues, ballads, instrumentals, improvisation and a devastatingly high level of musicality, Jeff Lang is a singularly unique performer in our world.

Ray Beadle has ripped it up at Bluesfest in the past, so they are welcoming him back with open arms in 2017. Ray's guitar and vocal styles evoke numerous blues legends, whilst concocting a breathtaking style all of his own. It is not by chance that Ray has become a favourite amongst Australian blues and music fans.

One of Australia’s most highly lauded Bluesmen will make his Bluesfest debut in 2017. Lloyd Spiegel is an award winning solo artist on the cutting edge of the blues scene in Australia. Australian Guitar Magazine recently named him as one of the 50 top Australian guitarists of all time and he recently won every prize he was eligible for at the Australian Blues Awards.

In the 70s, Australian singer-songwriter/guitarist Glenn Cardier produced three albums of highly original folk/rock songs. He played the first two Sunbury festivals and worked with the likes of Frank Zappa, Spike Milligan, and Fairport Convention. He broke through in the tough UK folk circuit. His hard-strumming, quirky onstage persona was always at odds with his recorded work and through the 80s and 90s Cardier became increasingly reclusive. Glenn Cardier’s re-emergence in the 2000s as a songwriter / performer of real distinction has been nothing short of extraordinary. Onstage, there are the trademark flashes of dark humour in his songs of stark beauty and thumping rockabilly/blues. There’s a touch of Beefheart in his voice, a hint of Cohen in the lyrics, a pinch of Elvis here and there. But underlying it all are the songs. Happy/sad songs. Sweet/crazy songs. Cardier songs.

Davy Knowles makes his Bluesfest debut in 2017, however he is no stranger to festivals having played Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo with his band Back Door Slam. Davy is known for his confident and distinctive guitar playing, commanding solos and tight-knit band. He is originally from the Isle of Man but has moved to Chicago recently where he made his 2016 album Three Miles From Avalon. Peter Frampton has called him “the gunslinger guitarist of the 21st century” so we are excited to introduce him to Australian audiences this year.

Bluesfest is thrilled to that The California Honeydrops will bring their feel good sound to the festival in 2017. The California Honeydrops don’t just play music—they throw parties. Led by dynamic vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lech Wierzynski, and drawing on diverse musical influences from Bay Area R&B, funk, Southern soul, Delta blues, and New Orleans second-line, the Honeydrops bring vibrant energy and infectious dance-party vibes to their shows.

She may be at the bottom of this announcement, but Melody Angel is destined to be at the top in the near future. Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, she began playing guitar at the age of thirteen. Even though her mother was barely getting by raising two children alone, she found a way to introduce Melody to her first Fender Stratocaster by buying the guitar out of a window of a pawn shop. She has been inspired by an array of artists such as, Michael Jackson, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, SRV, Big Mama Thornton, Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Slash, Lenny Kravitz, Santana, and Jeff Buckley. In her single ‘In This America’ which is dedicated to “all the mothers that have lost their black sons unjustly” she sings “How do I know it’s safe to have a son in this America?” and it is impossible not to be moved by her powerful words and heartbreaking delivery. Melody Angel is an important voice and one that deserves to be heard around the world.

All 5, 3 & 1 day festival and camping tickets are currently on sale through www.bluesfest.com.au or by phoning the Bluesfest office on 02 6685 8310 but will be taken off sale next week at the latest.

www.bluesfest.com.au

Murwillumbah to come alive with art and culture in May

In the wake of Tropical Cyclone Debbie, Murwillumbah Art Trail (MAT) organisers Annie Long and Natascha Wernick announce the new MAT program and encourage the community get involved and invite their regional friends and family to join them in the MAT activities. Brainchild from historian Kate Gahan and cultural planner Skye McNamara from Ballina Shire Council. Over a period of nine months they conducted workshops bringing members from the Alstonville Plateau Historical Society (dubbed heritage buddies) together with young people from Alstonville High School in order to create new-media art relating local history.

Kate and Skye chose nine topics and found buddies who related to the topics. These were then joined by students for more research and story idea development. After which the new media mentors were introduced. Without any instructions besides ‘new-media’ the groups came up with a proposal of how to approach and present their topic.

Generally the format chosen was a narrative video, which had to fit within a three minute time limit. A few teams sought to break away from the norm: “Newrybar” produced an interactive street map. “The Bank of NSW” designed a digital flipbook and “Education” assembled a talking display featuring the award winning school band from Alstonville Primary.

Some members of the historic society saw their chance to fulfil long life dreams with one passionate senior radically planning to liberate Sheroo’s kart in Lumley Park, having the bolt cutters ready. Instead they found they had all the elements necessary to really take flight on unlocking Sheroo’s story by using a drone.

The Cemetery team struggled to find a grave they wanted to feature but with a stroke of genius made this search their story. They told me “What interested us about the story was the suspicion around his death, the way he died was really unusual and very strange. We had to sift through lots of evidence which was fun, like detectives.”

Similarly students investigating “Policing the Plateau” reached the verdict that past and present crimes of the area were seldom terribly serious. Visitors to the Pixel the Past exhibition can further glean insight in the history of Lumley Park from the perspective of its large colony of fruit bats.

With very few exceptions all participants were novices at creating new-media art. As such the mentors became extremely important to not only help the teams develop a story but assist planning the shoot, instruct on equipment, teach how to record and heavily support the editing. Students and Buddies alike rose to the challenge with several new digital creators on the rise.

As a result of this hard work and combined forces, nine very varied but quality new media artworks are shown at Northern Rivers Community Gallery, cnr Cherry & Crane Streets, Ballina from 29 March till 23 April.

Pixel of the Past is a collaborative exhibition produced by Skye McNamara, Kate Gahan, Stephanie O’Brien, Susie Forster, Karenza Ebejer, Duke Albada, Historic Society Collaborators: Jane Gardiner, John Simm, Elaine McCormack, Lois Hennes, Amanda Burdon, Cathey Cohen, Roger Stanfield, Jan Allen, Richmond Manyweathers. Undoubtedly, Meet You At The End is Round Mountain Girls’ most elaborate and daring release yet. Four years since their last recording session together, lots had changed for the band and each of its members. Sharing their individual songs they wrote over that time, they began to notice that their writing styles were now telling the tales of those they had met over the years, a revelation which gave birth to this progressive “story album”. Meet You At The End tells the tale of a man had it all, lost it all, and goes on to find himself on that long road to recovery. Plagued by the past and wondering where his life went wrong, like many, his life takes an unexpected turn and due to his careless partying he finds himself in rehab craving a fresh start. With his thoughts planted on his family, love, and the time he carelessly squandered, his attempt to find happiness paves the way for his realisation to his own mortality. True to their past works, the album oozes the signature Round Mountain Girls’ sound. Genre bending in every sense of the word, an array of instruments and styles play throughout the album, from frantic banjo and guitar riffs and snapping drums, to the sultry string lines and passionate vocal harmonies, it’s this diverse aptitude which make the dark, reminiscent, and hopeful narratives so relatable.

What can fans expect from this special hometown launch?

Firstly, a free copy of the new album! It’s an RMG tradition we give our local friends a first listen to the physical copy. Tweed Coast and Byron Shire locals have done nothing but encourage us from the start. It’s obviously a highlight for us every time we release something new. It'll be a great night - we'll play the new album in its entirety and then have an after party as only RMG can. We've got some hot guests, there's likely to be a bit of off the cuff jamming, and a full stage.

What’s your favourite local spot to get inspiration for new music?

Banjovi takes his guitar and plays in the back of his van looking out over the Pacific at Cabarita Headland. It’s hard not to come up with something with such a stunning vista. Brooker plays his guitar whilst sitting on the toilet, so its part inspiration, part perspiration. It would also explain why his music smells different.

Do you all live local to Northern NSW region?

Most of us live within a coo-ee of Round Mountain, the exception being Francois, our South African drummer. We wouldn't normally allow a Gold Coaster into the inner circle, but he's so good we made an exception to the rule.

What's the best gig you've seen in the local area lately?

Wow, that's a hard question...there's so many good players around and we're actually blessed with some great local venues that support the talent in the area. We’re also lucky to have great venues that encourage original music.

How is this latest release musically different from your previous releases?

We spread this album out over 5 sessions and 12 months. Firstly it spread the fun out for us and secondly, life is busy for RMG and finding a time where we could all have 2 or 3 weeks off to record was near impossible.

The whole album was recorded in and around Byron Bay. As fate would have it, each studio we recorded at closed down immediately after we’d been in it for either refurbishment or change of hands- except for the last one, Pete Murray’s. We did the bulk of recording at Rocking Horse Studios and Pete Murray’s. We apologise to Pete if his studio has since gone into liquidation!

It’s also the first time we’ve had a dog on the album.

Did you set out to write a concept album from the beginning or did it happen as the songs started coming together?

The first 2 tracks we wrote were distinctly different. Constant Rhythm is this beautiful love song about having someone special in your life that helps you through. The next song was Young and Able, written about a mate who hasn’t seen his daughter for 19 years. It was about this time we felt a thread beginning to run through. It’s been 4 years since our last recording and in that time we’ve had a lot of things happen both personally and as a band. Ideas for each song have been developed in isolation from each other but we noticed that if we ran the tracks in a certain order it created a story about 1 person- a man who'd had it all, lost it all and his attempts to mend it. It became even more interesting when we decided to release on vinyl and have a distinct Side A Side B.

You recently supported the Levellers in Australia, how did that all come about?

Our name was put forward to the promoter by our publicist as being the ideal band to support this iconic UK act. We did the East Coast leg of their world tour and they liked us so much they invited us to their own festival, Beautiful Days in the UK in August. We’re going international!!

Any tour gossip you can share?

It’s amazing what you learn on tour. We found out that Willy Bee, our bass player, has a third nipple shaped like Tasmania. Apart from that we have nothing to report. We are a boring bunch and like to be in bed with a hot milky drink by 10pm.

MEET YOU AT THE END ALBUM TOUR

March 25, Cudgen Leagues Club, Kingscliff NSW April 1, Night Quarter, Gold Coast QLD April 2, Caloundra Power Boat Club, Sunshine Coast QLD April 7, The Music Lounge, Sydney NSW April 8, Heritage Hotel, Wollongong NSW April 13, Bluesfest, Byron Bay NSW April 23, Brunswick Hotel, Brunswick Heads NSW April 24, Kingscliff Hotel, Kingscliff NSW April 28, Wintermoon Festival, Mackay QLD May 13, Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane QLD

TICKETS AND MORE DETAILS HERE

An evening with A.C. AC Grayling is the Master of the New College of the Humanities, London, and its Professor of Philosophy, and the author of over thirty books of philosophy, biography, history of ideas, and essays. He has twice been a judge on the Booker Prize, in 2015 serving as the Chair of the judging panel. He is a Vice President of the British Humanist Association, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. His new book, The Age of Genius (published by Bloomsbury) explains how, fuelled by original and unorthodox thinking, war and technological invention, the seventeenth century became the crucible of modernity. In the turbulent seventeenth century, science moved from the alchemy and astrology of John Dee to the painstaking observation and astronomy of Galileo, from the classicism of Aristotle, still favoured by the Church, to the evidence-based, collegiate investigation of Francis Bacon. And if the old ways still lingered and affected the new mind set – Descartes’s dualism an attempt to square the new philosophy with religious belief; Newton, the man who understood gravity and the laws of motion, still fascinated to the end of his life by alchemy – by the end of that tumultuous century ‘the greatest ever change in the mental outlook of humanity’ had irrevocably taken place. Professor Grayling has been brought to Australia by the World Science Festival Brisbane and is appearing at Byron Theatre with the help of Queensland Museum and Bloomsbury Publishing Ltd. AC Grayling will be at Byron Theatre on Thursday 30 March, 6pm. The title refers to the “travel-ling salesman style” of his old school solo tour.

1. Was there a different approach to the writing process for "Car Boot Sale"? It seems each song has a very concise message, directly to the point. Whether on the message of love like we hear in "Happy Tears" or about the troubles of the world like on "Race to the Bottom".

I suppose in a way there was. I came away from my last record "Familiar Stranger" feeling like a lot of stuff I was trying to get across kind of got lost amongst the big, broad idea's that I was trying to explore. that record was really dense and expansive and almost grandiose by my standards so I went in to writing for this album wanting to strip everything back, get back in touch with the idea of every song feeling good to play on an acoustic guitar without any accompaniment and simplifying my approach to lyrics and instrumentation. I think Tony Buchen, (producer) and I kind of pulled it off. I really like "Car Boot Sale". It sounds like how I imagined it might.

2. Your podcast "Good Evans it's a BobCast" has had some great reactions from your fans. How did it come about? And who can we expect to hear on the upcoming pod casts?

Well to be honest it wasn't my idea. My manager suggested it to me. When she did I was immediately hesitant because at that stage I hadn't really engaged with the whole world of podcasts at all, so I didn't really under-stand what they were all about. Also, I just wasn't even sure that I had the time or the energy to put in to a new project at this point in my life. But I started listening to them and I found some I really liked and that started to give me an idea of the kind of podcast I'd like mine to be. What I've loved in a lot of other podcasts I now listen to and what I try and do with the Bobcast is record a free flowing conversation with very little direction or structure and hopefully we'll stumble over some interesting or funny subject matters. Now I have a list of about 7 or 8 pod-casts I subscribe to and listen to regularly when I drive in my car so it's really taken over the radio for me, be-cause previously the car was the only place I ever listened to the radio.

3. How has the Josh Pyke and Bob Evans 10th anniversary tour been? I had the privilege of attending the Gold Coast gig at the Sound Lounge and it was certainly comedic and a treat to hear you both performing together again. I am sure you have a story or 2 from the road.

It's been great fun. Preparing for it was quite hard work though. I set aside 2 or 3 days every week throughout the month of October to learn all the songs of Josh's I needed to learn. It's a lot of work learning all of someone else's lyrics and all the harmony parts. It's quite technical. So I was really nervous before the first show in Adelaide, which ended up going great. Every show just got a little bit easier, in the sense that I was more confident of knowing what I was doing. The really surprising thing about the show for both Josh and I is how the stage banter has taken on a life of it's own. From opening night all the way through to the last show we have never spoken about what we might talk about. We go in blind to it every night and it turns out that we stumble across some pretty funny moments. I think the fact that we are genuinely close friends means that we are relaxed enough around each other to just say pretty much anything that comes to mind. Anyway, I'm happy that people have been enjoying that part of the show and I'm proud that every show is different and unique.

4. How are you expecting the "Good Evans it's Xmas" shows to be? What a great idea to give people the opportunity to have you perform in their lounge room. Hopefully people don't try and take it to the bedroom. Have you had any strange requests?

Ha! Well I've never done a house concert before so I have no idea what to expect but I hope that they are fun and intimate and leave me with a warm tingling sensation in my heart. I'm always wary of people wanting to take things to the bedroom as I am well aware of my status as "the thinking woman’s crumpet", (actually, I just like to think of myself as that. I have no evidence at all that anyone else does).

5. What are the plans for 2017, including all things Jebediah, Bob Evans and dare I ask Basement Birds"?

Well I'm going to be playing lots of shows for sure. I'm going to do a big solo tour and try and get to all the country nooks and crannies I haven't visited since the last album which next year will be 4 years ago. I'll just be playing lots of small, intimate solo shows all over the place. Jebediah have got a bunch of shows on the horizon too so I'll be nice and busy which is good. On the more creative side, well I'd love for Jebs to get together and do some writing and Josh and I have been talking about doing more stuff together, just cos we have had such a good time touring together and hanging out! We've come up with a few idea's to work on next year so that we can play more shows together! Hopefully we'll find some time

DISCOVER LOCAL ARTISTS AT D’BAR HOUSE

D’bar House art gallery and gift shop is a family-operated business that has been running for ten years. D’bar House displays artworks by local artists in the main room of the gallery each month. Gallery attendant Ally Archdeacon describes the goal of D’bar House as “supporting local artists and art suppliers.”

Artworks of various mediums and styles have been displayed at D’bar House, including acrylic and lino works, portraits and works with ocean, surf and garden themes. While the artists mostly come from the Gold Coast, there are artists from all around Australia, including some from Brunswick Heads, Byron Bay and Brisbane. Ms Archdeacon said “a lot of artists like to source their works in our facility.” Christine Cooper’s acrylic, abstract works will fill the main room of the gallery with ocean life images until 11th of January, 2017.

After an exhibition at D’bar House artist Rosemary Upton was asked to showcase her work at the Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah. Ms Archdeacon said artists have been sourced from all around the world because of the range of different customers that come there.

D’bar House has an outdoor veranda with magnificent views of Snapper Rocks and Tweed Heads’ only beach, Duranbah. Indoors has a modern, beach-house look; wander past the artworks and gifts, some locally-sourced, ranging from summer clothing, stone jewellery, natural skincare, lifestyle books written by local authors, candles, postcards and vegan nail polish. Always fancy dress, they were held in the Uki Hall on the last Saturday in May during the 1980s and early 1990s and prof-its went to a charity or local community group.

“Many locals have vivid and entertaining stories about the May Balls and I have absolutely no doubt there are many many more historically important anecdotes out there that locals might be ready to share,” Ms Kean said.

The bottle and plates retrieved from the ashes of the Mount Warning Hotel fire are among the very few surviving objects and are still covered with soot and debris. The hotel was an iconic meeting place for locals and its destruction devastated local residents.

“The Museum’s collection documents the history of many Tweed villages and our exhibition program over the new few years will progressively focus on a number of them,” she said.

“Not only will each display feature items already in the Museum’s collection, we also want to work with each community to expand the collection and share stories that reflect contemporary village life.

‘History doesn’t stop. Many of the shire’s villages were prominent in early settlement of the valley and its prosperity, and they remain central to what makes the Tweed unique. It’s important we continue to document what makes them tick.”

Visitors to the Village Stories display have the opportunity to record their own memories and anecdotes about Uki and about other Tweed villages.

This exhibition is a journey through Uki's colourful past, from fancy dress to the local tug-o-war heroes. Learn some of the secret stories of Uki and discover a collection of local objects that has never been displayed in public! In conjunction with this exhibition, the Tweed Regional Museum is hosting a Walking tour of Uki village, led by members of the Uki & South Arm Historical Society.

THE REAL INSPECTOR HOUND IS RIOTOUS FUN

Agatha Christie fans will shudder in their boots when Murwillumbah Theatre Company presents the hilarious Tom Stoppard parody The Real Inspector Hound from March 17.When feuding theatre critics Moon and Birdboot come to review a new Agatha Christie-like whodunit, they become implicated in the lethal atrocities of a suspected escaped madman. They are drawn into the ludicrous plot and reluctantly become part of the conflict on stage. The critics become players, and players critics.

The murder mystery – play-within-a-play – is set at Muldoon Manor, a typical setting for the detective genre. A stately old house, perched on the high cliffs amongst desolate marshes. It’s the perfect setting for nefarious goings-on.

The two theatre critics, a cynical and pretentious second-string Moon and Birdboot, a pompous, philandering tabloid hack who uses his column to ingratiate himself with attractive actresses, are ripe for a fall. This is one play they will not easily forget. Whodunit? You’ll have to come along to witness this uproarious farce for yourself.

Tom Stoppard is considered England’s greatest living playwright and screenwriter. He was awarded a Tony for his play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead in 1968. Stoppard received an Oscar for his contribution to the film Shakespeare In Love and also wrote screenplays for films like Empire Of The Sun. He was later knighted for his services to the performing arts.

The Real Inspector Hound is one of Stoppard’s most-performed plays, with an intriguing plot that blurs the boundaries between actor, audience and critic. The main characters conduct a personal struggle to affirm their beliefs in a bewildering world. It is an example of Theatre of the Absurd, a style of writing that highlights the meaningless of human existence.

Hound is a side-splitting spoof on plays like Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, poking fun at actors, critics and the constabulary alike. What starts as a preposterous thriller, ends as a real-life expose.

The Real Inspector Hound will be staged at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre on March 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 31 and April 1. Night-time shows start at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm.

For further information and tickets, go to murwillumbahtheatrecompany.com

IS FEAR MAKING US STUPID?

There’s a lot more to be fearful about these days. This is abundantly clear as I scan my email spam folder where the speed at which the world is sinking into the sewer seems exponential! This is abundantly clear as I scan my email spam folder where the speed at which the world is sinking into the sewer seems exponential! Fast finishers in the bedroom, the growing unacceptability regarding the size and shape of our private parts, the on-going trauma caused by the Brad and Angelina split a couple of years ago (who knew paradise would fall so ungraciously), are all taking an increasing toll on our mental health and cognitive capacity.

Then there’s the resilience of governments and mining companies intent on stealing our children’s future, the ever-widening gap between rich and poor, the 60 million or so people fleeing persecution, torture and death worldwide, those increasingly annoying and extreme weather events and, of course, just way too many Christians running around speaking like they were kidnapped and dumped in a Hitler Youth camp when they were young.

Just at a time when reason and rational thinking processes are required to develop workable solutions to the world’s problems, they become first-class casualties to the cause. Then come the predators, the charismatic fear-mongers offering simple and stupid solutions to complex social problems because someone forgot to put ‘critical thinking’ in past school curriculums.

These ideological predators smell out fear the way the rest of us smell out hot, cinnamon doughnuts in an organic, hippy market! Anti-intellectualism and fact-free wares are their specialty and these can be as seductive as heroin to the fact-challenged, all because someone didn’t learn how to truth check sensationalised rhetoric against reputable sources. Sigh!

Fear makes for easy pickings as ‘alternative facts’ conflate the hate to blame those who are different. How easily then do the fact-challenged sail into a new milieu of caveman tactics where they feel more comfortable with feelings of powerlessness in an ever-changing world. Granted, violence may cheer them up for a bit because it feels good to hit someone you don’t know, if you think they’re the reason you feel bad. Here’s the thing though, if you keep hitting them, they or their friends will probably start hitting you back at some stage. Such is the path of fear to stupidity and eventually to evil.

Ok, it’s not the first time large groups of people have been manipulated to do evil things because they felt scared and powerless, so stupid took over. Just ask the Germans! But if you’re getting a bit depressed about the whole shemozzle, there is light at the end of the tunnel, in spite of the growing epidemic of decency blindness.

‘An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind’, said Gandhi, and he proved to be one smart Indian dude who took on the British Empire and won! You see, there are many examples in history where stupid crashed and burned, leaving space for something better to sneak in and flourish for a while.

If that doesn’t convince you, at least remember that even the Roman Empire fell as stupidity and its cousins, arrogance, war and apathy, joined forces to collapse it at its heart. Yes, it took a few hundred years but if you stay positive, good things come quicker!

So to all of you hoping that reason will prevail in this ‘shallow pond of stupid’ steadily seeping into your lives, all is not lost because there’s an existential fail safe programmed into the encroaching slime. If evil is born of hate, if hate is born of fear, if fear makes us stupid, then the trick is to avoid that slippery slope all together. Just take the family somewhere nice on a slime-free picnic, run around in circles laughing wildly to alleviate the fear and be happy in the knowledge that karma, or at least evolutionary biology, will eventually clean up the mess.

Yes, as the Buddhists say, evil (and stupid) cannot sustain itself indefinitely because when there is nothing left outside of itself to fight against, by it’s very nature, evil (and stupid) can do none else but turn on itself and destroy it’s own existence. Phew, that’s a relief!
